CCOSC’s Presence at the Asia Summit on Flexible Learning Strategies:

UNESCO along with Educate a Child and UNICEF with the support of Action Aid, Aide et Action, ASPABAE, Save the Children, SEAMEO and QLF organised this interesting and informative 3 day summit from 24th to 26th February, 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand.

 

This summit brought together government officials, intergovernmental organizations, I/NGO partners, Educators, business representatives and other stakeholders from 30 Asian member states as well as colleagues from further away. The main purpose was to share and discuss innovations and to learn about different flexible learning strategies that are used which benefit the most marginalised children in the region.

 

Despite all the efforts made to make education a reality for ALL children, the numbers of children who continue to be out of school has increased in recent years, and right now there are more than 59 million children who are out of school worldwide. The school systems need to change to enable all children to achieve better learning outcomes. So this summit was very timely as it showcased many great examples of how different countries are developing flexible learning strategies that keep the children at the heart of education.

 

The different themes covered during the summit included Gender, Disability, Ethnic Minorities, Child Labour, Emergencies (conflict and natural disasters), Stateless and undocumented and Migrant . 15 members of the CCOSC representing 5 different partners attended the Summit. It was a great opportunity to learn about different strategies used to enroll and retain out of school children. A number of these flexible strategies are worth considering for our CCOSC programme.

 

The CCOSC was represented not just by attendance at the Summit, but we also showcased our examples and what has worked in Cambodia. The following presentations were made by:

 

Jan Noorlander, of CARE in Cambodia, the lead organisation on ethnic minorities for CCOSC, presented a really good example of working in partnership with the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport (MoEYS) to develop Multi-lingual education curriculum to benefit children from ethnic minorities. CARE worked on developing the curriculum and put it into practice for a number of years. This showed that this is one way to ensure children from ethnic minorities have a chance to be educated.  This curriculum and pedagogy have now been adopted by MoEYS - a success story that benefit thousands of children in Cambodia.

Chanveasna Chin of NEP and Socheat Lam of AEA both presented about the formation and the advantages of CCOSC and that despite the view that INGOs and NGOs are very competitive, this coming together of 23 international and local NGOs is possible. There was a great interest shown by the participants in this presentation. Kudos goes to all CCOSC partners and AEA in their coordination role in making this work.

 

Another innovative model was presented by Samphors Vorn of AEA on Enabling Sustainable Educational Services through Social Enterprise. This model is iLEAD International School model. Mr. Prasert Tepanart, Regional Director of Aide et Action Southeast Asia, was the moderator of a session dedicated to the innovation in the field of education, arts and sports in the context that exceeds a simple primary education.

The Music Revolution in Venezuala: This was done via a video presentation as the presenter could not attend in person. It showed the importance of how music can help children/youth get better opportunities in life.

The Arts and Learning in a non-formal life-long learning centre in Mongolia. This showcased the importance of art in education.
